Heat & cold safety
Older adults are more sensitive to extreme temperatures. Simple steps can protect life.
Hot weather
- Drink water even if you don’t feel thirsty
- Stay in air conditioning during peak heat
- Cool centers: call 211 for public cooling locations
- Never leave anyone in a parked car
- Watch for dizziness, confusion, or rapid pulse — call 911 if severe
Cold weather
- Heat at least one room safely; keep doors closed
- Dress in layers; cover head and hands outdoors
- Check on neighbors who live alone
- Know signs of hypothermia: shivering, confusion, drowsiness
- If heat is off, call 211 for emergency warming help
