Reduce falls at home
Falls are a leading cause of injury for older adults. Many can be prevented with small changes. Print this list and walk through the house with a family member.
Floors & paths
- Remove or tape down throw rugs
- Keep walkways clear of cords, shoes, and clutter
- Wipe spills right away
- Use non-slip mats in kitchen and entry
Lighting
- Bright bulbs in hallways, stairs, and bathroom
- Night-lights on the path to the bathroom
- Light switches easy to reach at room entrances
Bathroom
- Grab bars by toilet and in tub/shower (installed into studs)
- Non-slip strips or mat in tub
- Shower seat if standing is hard
- Raised toilet seat if helpful
Stairs
- Handrails on both sides if possible
- Contrast strip on edge of steps
- Nothing stored on stairs
Personal habits
- Supportive, non-slip shoes — avoid floppy slippers
- Review medicines with a doctor or pharmacist (some cause dizziness)
- Stand up slowly; sit a moment before walking
- Keep phone within reach; consider a medical alert device
- Eye exam if vision has changed
If a fall happens
Stay calm. If you can, roll to your side, crawl to a sturdy chair, and use it to help stand. If you are hurt or cannot get up, call 911. Even if you feel fine, tell your doctor about the fall.
