Driving and independence
Keys feel like freedom. The goal is not to take dignity. The goal is nobody getting hurt — and a ride plan already in place.
Warning signs
Dents you can’t explain · getting lost nearby · running lights · family won’t ride with them · medicines that cause drowsiness · new vision or reaction changes.
A kinder conversation
Talk in daylight, not after a scare. Use “I’m worried about a crash” not “You’re too old.” Offer a driving evaluation through AAA, AARP Smart Driver, or an occupational therapist.
Replace the keys with a plan
Write who drives to church, grocery, and doctor. Put it on the fridge. Use the rides page the same week — not after the keys are gone.

The doctor can advise. State licensing rules differ. This is not legal advice — ask the clinician and your state motor vehicle office.
